The regulation of the Department of Surgery is subordinated to the regulation of the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Porto, adopting own specifications.
The Department of Surgery encloses subjects both from the surgical area and anesthesiology. They equally share the understanding of the surgical patient and the consequences in safety and quality conditions, through one of the most important areas of expertise.
The Department is constituted by the following units, corresponding each of them to a scientific and educational area, being scientifically and educationally autonomous, as they encompass specific types of knowledge and deliver different types of services:
Anesthesiology and Peri-anesthesia care
Angiology and Vascular Surgery
General Surgery
Pediatric Surgery
Plastic, Reconstructive, Aesthetic Surgery and Maxillofacial Surgery
Orthopedics and Traumatology
Experimental Surgery
The specific aims of the Department of Surgery are:
Reaching an excellent educational and scientific intervention in the above mentioned areas in 1st, 2nd and 3rd cycles of studies, degree granting or non-degree granting programs, as well as delivering perfect service to the communities.
Strengthening the knowledge in surgical intervention and its quality, as well as in patients' safety during the perioperative period, in the most diverse perspectives and implications.
The simultaneous participation of different units in clinical research. Additionally, the partaking of other department in research and translation, as well as other academic and assistance institutions must be fostered.
The promotion of Doctoral programs, considering the implications of human and material mobilization. To meet the aims and needs of hospital institutions, whose services, medical doctors and patients are a part of the scientific and educational activities of the Department and corresponding Units.
The collaboration in specialization vocational programs and continuing professional improvement of hospital doctors and other institutions, namely Scientific Societies and Medical Association.
To encourage researchers to publish original results, preferably with impact, from research in medical magazines of reference.
The use of Experimental Surgery as a privileged instrument of scientific and educational development and service delivery, namely in training and teaching students in how to perform invasive surgeries in models and animals, training interns, introducing surgical innovation (namely in the acquisition of endo-trainers and virtual surgery simulators)and helping in the development of Doctoral and Master thesis.
The Department comprises, through the corresponding units, all the educational responsibilities of the 1st, 2nd and 3rd cycles of studies, which are transferred from the previous services.
The teaching, secretary and auxiliary staff, who are currently working at the Services which are part of the Department, will automatically be transferred to the Department of Surgery.
The executive board is composed by five professors or researchers who comply with the regulations of FMUP. If possible, all the elements of the board should come from different Units.
Transitory provision: The regulation of each unit, which has to be approved 30 days after the formal constitution of the department, will include the rules which will regulate its functioning and management, concerning the achievement of the aims of the Department and the autonomy of the educational and scientific areas of each unit.
